Reducing CO2 emissions by reducing the weight of airplanes

Introduction to Sustainable Aviation with ANA Airlines

Introducing ANA Airlines' exploration of sustainable aviation practices, a dedicated effort towards a cleaner and more eco-friendly future. In our ongoing commitment to reduce carbon emissions, we're excited to share insights into impactful initiatives within the aviation industry, particularly focusing on the inspiring work done by ANA Airlines.

Conducted by ANA Airlines, this sustainability study delves into innovative strategies for reducing airplane weight, with the ultimate goal of achieving zero CO2 emissions. Join us in discovering one of the significant efforts undertaken by ANA: "Reducing the weight of in-flight service carts."

The Impact of Lightweight In-Flight Service Carts

In pursuing a lighter ecological footprint, ANA has implemented various measures, including reducing weight in in-flight service trolleys. In 2015, ANA gradually introduced lightweight trolleys on international flights, transforming materials and streamlining design.

By May 2022, all in-flight service trolleys, including those on domestic flights, are set to be replaced.

The impact is remarkable. These new carts, featuring about 70 units per Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, have led to a substantial weight reduction of up to 10 kg per trolley. This translates to a total weight reduction of approximately 580 kg per aircraft, contributing to an annual fuel consumption reduction of about 5,700 tons across the ANA fleet. This equates to a reduction in CO2 emissions equivalent to about 17,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

As we move forward, ANA Airlines continues to inspire with a dedication to developing eco-friendly products and services, collectively contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable world.
